waiting for a ride (1986) i recorded this version in 1991 on my first porta studio four-track cassette deck. i think bob sent me a tape with a drum beat on it and nothing else; this song sort of fit.  two guitar tracks, one is slide guitar.

going up the road to see a friend i haven’t in a while

to talk about our day where we’ve been and what we might have done

barrel in a basket pound those pilgrims

beat ‘em on the flat rocks steal their shoes

mary on the dashboard hail a taxi

whisk me from this vale of tears

staring at the fog as it rolls across the fields outside

sliding into place beneath the trees ‘til daylight sends us home

jesus in a sidecar both ends bleeding

gone to fight the turks in a holy war

mary on the mountain pray or something

lift me from this world of woe

waiting for a ride i wonder how i came to leave that place
without a word i watch the traffic changing with the light

through the dirty glass looking for a cab that may not come

hoping i will know by sight or sound the way to take me home

jack in a pine-box, no one’s laughing

they hit him in the head with a real big hole

mary in her bare feet rolling snake eyes

standing on a mound that’s covering a mole

mary at the manger stuff that scarecrow

hang it on a pole o’er the amber waves

mary on the dashboard hail a taxi

whisk me from this awful place
